Knowledge sharing culture at XIMNET

Every team member has got some knowledge worth sharing. However, with the busy team schedule set in place, it can be challenging to bring everyone together to share and learn.

So instead of having lengthy in-depth sharing sessions, we thought a weekly 30-minute session is a good start. At XIMNET, we call it One-Thing Wednesday.

One-Thing Wednesday allows team members to share topics they think are useful or entertaining for the team. Some even take it as the opportunity for them to improve their presentation skills, as well as to recap what they have learn in their online courses.

As the team lead, I look forward to listening to what my team has got to share every week. Noteworthy sessions are topics that I am unfamiliar with, such as, AI in Go (the board game), Regular Expression, Chatbot Technologies and The Importance of Code Review.

In fact, I find knowledge sharing extremely useful for us as a team. Here’s why:

You learn about each other beyond work

Everyone is good at something we may not have the chance to discover when we work with our team members. Hence, One-Thing Wednesday allows us to share our passion and interest in something out of our usual work responsibilities. It was through these sessions I discover a handful of great storytellers in the team as well as coders who can design!

It is a platform to groom the team’s confidence

Presentation skill is important when it comes to being one of the best digital agencies in Malaysia. At XIMNET, all of us are taught how to be a good communicator – with the help of our friendly in-house audience. We learn to design impactful presentation slides to convey our points. We also learn how to keep our sentences short and easy to understand. Most importantly, we learn to give meaningful examples so that our audience remembers them. If one did not get it right the first time, he can always do it again and again, until he is confident in front of his audience.

Every burst of laughter brings us closer together as a team

One-Thing Wednesday is the opportunity to get us together and there is always something to laugh or joke about. This helps to take our minds off from work for a good 30 minutes and truly immerse into simply staying present to learn something new. Work sure looks easier to deal with after a good laugh. It keeps us healthy too.

In a nutshell, allocating 30 minutes weekly for One-Thing Wednesday has helped to bring us closer and also encouraged generation of ideas that will strongly contribute to the team’s growth in the long run.

The digital ground shifts rapidly. Teams need to constantly learn together and stay relevant. Besides, where is the fun when we decide to stop learning?
